We’re all in a hurry when we get behind the wheel…
LEAVE SPACE – Leaving more than 1 metre between your car and a bike rider on roads with a speed limit 60km/h an under, and 1.5 metres on roads with speed limits over 60km/h.
LOOK – Be careful when leaving a driveway, always take an extra moment to look for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, bike riders and motorbike riders.
SLOW DOWN – as you approach pedestrian crossings, you might need to stop. It can be difficult to see a person about to cross.
LIGHT UP – drive with your lights on low beam in gloomy weather.
HANG BACK – leave more than a 2-3 second gap between you and the vehicle in front, you never know when you’ll need to stop suddenly.
HORSE AROUND – see a horse and rider, slow down and give them plenty of space. If the horse becomes distressed, the rider will give you a hand signal to stop. Wait patiently until they wave you on through.
Opening your car door without looking for a pedestrian, bike rider or motorbike rider.
Cutting in front of a cyclist when turning at an intersection.
Parking in a bike lane.
Blocking intersections and refusing to let another vehicle merge into your lane.
Not allowing buses to enter the flow of traffic or change lanes.
